English Commentary

The title of the poem makes us think that this poem is just to the highest degree distance and separation. Africa is metaphorically represented as a victuals beast: the tawny pelt of Africa. In the second fresh pattern Walcott uses simile to doom the comparision between Kikuyu(Kenyas more or less thickly settled ethnic group) and flies: Kikuyu, quick as flies. whence Walcott repeatedly uses the metaphor to describe the bloodstreams of the veldt. We can assimilate the image of Africa with the dead bodies which are disoriented finished a paradise. In the undermentioned promissory note we are told nearly the wriggle which was described as a colonel of carrion(anthropomorphism). The military language is besides important. Perhaps Walcott is suggesting that the worm is a symb ol of the military colonisers who benefit from suffering and death. Here, Walcott also uses technique called alliteration: Colonel of carrion, cries. scourge no compassion on these separate dead! could be easily said by a literal colonel in a compassionless army. After exclaiming in the previous line Walcotts worm changes his scent:Statistics justify and scholars seize/The salients of compound indemnity. Walcott uses alliteration( Statistics, scholars, seize, salients) here. He wants to show how inhumane the colonial policy actually is. He does this through his wide language choises. Walcott uses emotively supercharged verb hacked to show the horrors of colonialism. In supplement he uses simile expendable as Jews which reminds readers about the ocassions in 20th century. In the next line we are told about cries of ! a wading birds-ibises. The military force of beast on beast is read/As rude(a) law .
